Pattaya gets dismissed too quickly. Yes, the nightlife is the headline — but the bay, the islands and the viewpoints deliver some of Thailand's most underrated sunset photography. Here are the nine spots we send every PicPal photographer to.
Sunset in Pattaya runs 6:00–6:45 PM year-round. Pattaya faces west across the Gulf, which means the sun drops directly into the sea on most evenings.
The shortlist
9 spotsPattaya Viewpoint (Pratamnak Hill)
The classic city overview — the curve of Pattaya Bay, Koh Larn on the horizon, fishing boats dotted across. Best 45 minutes before sunset for the golden light over the bay.
Koh Larn — Samae Beach
A 30-minute ferry from Bali Hai Pier. The west-facing beaches (Samae, Nual) get the postcard sunset. Take the last ferry back at 6:30 PM or arrange a private speedboat for a true sunset shoot.
Sail Rock (Sanctuary of Truth area)
The 105m wooden temple itself is an extraordinary backdrop, but the rocks and beach immediately north give cleaner sunset frames with the sanctuary in soft focus behind.
Pattaya Beach Walk pier
The wooden jetty in front of Hilton Pattaya is a perfect runway frame, especially with longtails moored at low tide. Quieter on the north end past Soi 4.
Buddha Mountain (Khao Chi Chan)
The 109m gold-engraved Buddha on the limestone face is best at the very last light when the rock glows. A 25-minute drive south but worth it for the unique frame.
Nong Nooch Tropical Garden
Manicured topiary, French gardens, palm avenues — sunset over the structured landscape is wedding-magazine material. Closes at 6 PM; aim for golden hour BEFORE close.
Jomtien Beach south end
Quieter than central Pattaya, with cleaner sand and longtails. The pier near Najomtien village frames sunset beautifully.
Pattaya Floating Market (golden hour)
The four-region market complex glows in late light. The wooden walkways and traditional Thai houses photograph in warm gold from 5–6 PM, before close at 8 PM.
Walking Street rooftop bars (post-sunset)
For the neon city look, grab a rooftop drink at Hilton's Horizon or the Edge by 6:45 PM and shoot blue hour over Walking Street as it lights up.
Field tips
- Ferry timing for Koh Larn: — The last public ferry back is 6:30 PM. For true sunset on the island, arrange a private speedboat (2,500–5,000 THB).
- Traffic: — Beach Road clogs after 5 PM. Allow 30 min for what should take 10.
- Weather: — May–October has dramatic monsoon skies, often clearing by 5 PM.
- Drone: — allowed with licence; avoid Sanctuary of Truth airspace.
