Phuket's west coast was made for sunset photography. The Andaman Sea drops the sun straight into the horizon, the limestone karsts catch the last gold, and longtail boats silhouette like cutouts. After dozens of shoots here, these are the nine spots we send every photographer to.
Sunset in Phuket runs 6:00–6:45 PM year-round. Plan to arrive 60 minutes before — the light 30–45 minutes pre-sunset is the most flattering window of the day.
The shortlist
9 spotsPromthep Cape
Phuket's most famous sunset viewpoint, and for good reason. The rocky headland juts into the sea with longtail boats anchored below. Get there by 5:15 PM in high season — by 5:45 PM it's packed. Walk down to the lower lighthouse path for cleaner foregrounds.
Karon Viewpoint (Kata Noi overlook)
The three-bay vista — Kata Noi, Kata, Karon — stacked perfectly. Best for wide silhouette portraits with the sun off-frame and the bays glowing.
Kata Beach south end
Skip the main beach and walk to the rocky south corner near the Boathouse. The longtails on the sand at low tide with sun behind = the Phuket photo. Shoes-off, knee-deep in the surf for the cleanest reflection.
Laem Singh Beach
A hidden cove accessible via a steep path (or the resort's shuttle). Dramatic boulders, palm overhang, almost no crowds at sunset. Bring a torch for the walk back.
Phi Phi day trip — Maya Bay & Bamboo Island
A long but rewarding day. The afternoon return boat passes the karsts at golden hour. Book the sunset speedboat tour if a full Phi Phi trip is too much.
Big Buddha at golden hour
The 45m white marble Buddha glows pink in the last sun. Shoot from the lower terrace looking up — the figure with mountains behind makes for striking backdrops. Open until 7:30 PM.
Phang Nga Bay longtail (sunset cruise)
The most cinematic option. A private longtail (2,500–4,000 THB) past James Bond Island and the limestone karsts at sunset. Two-hour window.
Surin Beach pier
Quieter than Patong, with a low wooden pier perfect for portrait framing and dock-edge sitting shots.
Old Phuket Town at blue hour
After sunset, head to Thalang Road for Sino-Portuguese facades lit warm against deep blue sky. Especially magical on Sunday night's walking street market.
Field tips
- Tide table: — check it. Low tide reveals the boats and rocks; high tide swallows them. windguru.cz has accurate Phuket data.
- Monsoon: — May–October brings dramatic skies but also rain. Storms usually clear in the late afternoon.
- Transport: — Grab (rideshare) is unreliable on the west coast — pre-arrange driver or rent a scooter.
- Bug spray: — sand flies appear at sunset on most west-coast beaches.
- Drone rules: — licensed only, no flights near airport, beach, or temples.

Browse our Phuket photographer directory — most are based on the west coast and know exact tide times for each beach. A 90-minute golden-hour session typically covers two of the spots above.
