What to Wear for a Photoshoot in Bali

By PicPal Team · Updated June 16, 2026

Bali's shoot palette is enormous — rice terraces, beaches, cliffs, temples, jungle. The outfit that works at Tanah Lot looks wrong at Tegallalang. Here's what we've learned dressing dozens of clients.

What to wear

  • Cream, white, off-white works against rice terraces, beaches, temples
  • Soft sage, dusty blue, dusty pink flatters skin in tropical light
  • Terracotta, mustard warmth that sings against green rice and beaches
  • Avoid: bright red, neon clips in tropical light; all-black — too hot, loses detail

Styling tricks

  • Natural fibres only linen, cotton, silk. Polyester turns into a sweat patch in 10 minutes here.
  • Cover shoulders and knees at temples non-negotiable at Tanah Lot, Uluwatu, Besakih, Lempuyang. Sarongs provided.
  • Two-look minimum if you're combining temple/jungle with beach.

What to avoid

  • Bare shoulders/knees at temples you'll be turned away
  • Heavy makeup humidity will defeat it. Tinted moisturiser, waterproof mascara, blotting papers
  • All-black anywhere outdoors gets unbearably hot, loses detail
  • Sheer white in rain season see-through risk
  • Brand-new shoes Bali pavements/temple steps are unforgiving

Location-specific notes

For Tegallalang/Ubud, lean earthy — terracotta, mustard, cream — and flowing. For Uluwatu/Seminyak, classic beach — cream, blush, sage, barefoot. For Tanah Lot/Lempuyang temples, traditional and modest — long sleeves, long skirts/trousers, white or cream. For Canggu cafe/street, lean trendier — linen co-ords, statement sandals, a colourful accessory.

Frequently asked questions

What do I wear to a Bali temple shoot?

Shoulders and knees fully covered. A long-sleeve linen dress + provided sarong for women; long linen trousers + collared shirt for men. Sarongs are provided/rentable at most temple entries.

Can I wear white at the rice terraces?

Yes — cream and off-white pop beautifully against the green. Avoid pure white in rainy season as it can turn sheer if you're caught in a shower.

Best colours for a Tegallalang rice terrace shoot?

Terracotta, mustard, cream and soft sage all sing against the green. Bright reds and neons clip in tropical light.

Do I need to bring my own sarong?

Not strictly — temple entries provide or rent sarongs (10k–20k IDR or included). But a personal sarong in your colour palette is a useful prop and cover-up throughout the trip.

What about shoes for a Bali shoot?

Barefoot for beach. Simple sandals or sneakers for street/cafe. Cover-toe shoes for rice paddies (slippery). NEVER stilettos on a swing or paddy — common ruined-shoot mistake.
